THE REBIRTH OF THE BAROQUE VIOLIN by Fred Lindeman

FOREWORD by Sigiswald Kuijken

1. INTRODUCTION: about myself, my background and youth – the rise of the historical performance practice movement – my pioneering quest to obtain knowledge about the construction of baroque instruments in museum depots throughout the world

2. PERFORMANCE PRACTICE: about the romantic style of performing that imposed its own ideals on all music regardless of the period of composition and the composer's wishes in the score – the emerging desire to return to a historically sound manner of performance – details of ensembles: the pioneers from 1970 onwards and their predecessors from before 1940 –  Sigiswald Kuyken’s then revolutionary idea of the need to restore modernised instruments to their original state – my involvement from 1967 onwards as 'his violin maker' and my consequent restoration work for other pioneers including Marie Leonhardt and Jaap Schrφder

3. HISTORY: details of violins in their original state – description of various stringed instruments of the baroque period which now re-emerged after centuries of neglect – details of modifications made to old instruments in response to new musical demands and tastes in the late18th century – comparison of technical construction details of the baroque, classical and modern violin

4. RESTORATION: the results of my research in museum depots into period instruments –  the finer points of restoring modernised instruments to their original state – instruments I have restored – changes since 1970 in the degree of restoration involved, due to the addition of later baroque and early classical works to the repertoire – controversy regarding the use of restored period instruments as opposed to newly-built copies
